WHAT IS A CLOWN
THE RED NOSE
In Search of the Clown
”The Clown is the poetic transposition
of the unique silliness of the actor,
as revealed by the smallest mask in the world: the Red Nose”.
Giovanni Fusetti
Deeply rooted in the Pedagogy of Physical Theatre, the “The Red Nose” proposes an introduction to theatre clown, considered a specific theatre style. The pedagogy focuses in particular on the analysis of the physical and emotional world of the actor, revealed by his or her natural body. This will lead to the discovery of a unique clown, with a specific body, tempo, voice, costume, attitudes, emotions, and poetic world.
To discover one’s own clown is to reveal one’s own unique imperfections, physical conflicts, “non-neutral attitudes”, and “background noises”, to amplify them with the use of the smallest mask in the world: the Red Nose.
The sublime stupidity of the clown is his enduring trust in life, despite his complete inadequacy. As a theatre style, Clown has a unique poetic potential because it allows the performer to explore and play with the naiveté of the child and the rigor of the adult, thus revealing the poetry of the ridiculous and a unique poetic silliness.
